H.A. Dorsten provided design-build general contracting services for a 16,762-square-foot facility for Corn Jerkers LLC, home of Jim Rode Butcher Shop, located in Delphos, Ohio.
The project featured a custom-engineered metal building, with structural columns strategically positioned to remain entirely outside of the refrigerated rooms. The interior build-out utilized insulated metal wall and ceiling panels throughout, with the exception of the retail area, dry storage, breakroom, and restrooms.
Due to the configuration of the refrigerated rooms, the concrete floor slab required a specialized approach. What would typically involve two pours in a standard building was instead completed in twelve separate pours to maintain thermal breaks between coolers and freezers.
Significant attention was devoted to ensuring each room was equipped with appropriately sized refrigeration systems. Additionally, extensive design work went into the structural steel framing for the kill floor, chill cooler, hanging coolers, and processing room. This included not only accommodating the layout of the overhead rail system, but also engineering self-supporting steel frames for each room that did not penetrate the insulated wall or roof panels.
